Trials

The Karen Read trial revolves around the death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe in January 2022. Read, his girlfriend at the time, was accused of striking him with her SUV and leaving him to die in the snow outside a fellow officer’s home in Canton, Massachusetts. The case has been highly publicized, with the defense arguing that Read was framed and that law enforcement mishandled the investigation.

First Trial (2024)
  • The first trial began in April 2024 and lasted several months.

  • Prosecutors alleged that Read intentionally hit O’Keefe in a drunken rage.

  • The defense countered, claiming that Read was the victim of a cover-up orchestrated by law enforcement.

  • The trial ended in July 2024 with a hung jury, meaning jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict, leading to a mistrial

    Second Trial (2025)

    • The retrial commenced in April 2025 with a new lead prosecutor and revised presentation of evidence.

    • Jurors visited the crime scene to better understand the context of the case.

    • Testimony has included forensic analysis of Read’s blood alcohol levels, surveillance footage, and text messages between Read and O’Keefe.

    • The defense continues to argue that Read was wrongfully accused, while the prosecution maintains that she deliberately struck O’Keefe.

    • The trial remains ongoing, with key witnesses returning to the stand and new evidence being introduced.
